OPPD definitely turned some heads at the 37th annual International Lineman’s Rodeo in Bonner Springs, Kansas.
The event, held Oct. 13-16, attracts the top linemen from around the world to compete in traditional tasks associated with their work roles. OPPD’s contingent, led by apprentice Ted Gyhra, more than held its own.
Gyhra, who has been competing in rodeo events the last few years, won first place in all four of the apprentice pole climbing events – pole climb, hurt-man rescue, obstacle course and mystery event. He also was awarded second place overall in the municipal division of the competition.
Richard Terrian finished sixth overall in the municipal division. Lee O’Neal, director of T&D Construction, said it was OPPD’s best showing ever.
“All of the OPPD team that participated did a great job and really represented OPPD well to the other utilities across the country,” O’Neal said.
Overall, OPPD sent one three-person Journeyman team and five apprentice. OPPD also sent judges to help oversee the event’s competition. The Journeymen team was Tony Liston, Pat Wagoner and Brent Sass. The apprentices were Gyhra, Terrian, Ben Kuhr, Matt Hobbs and Darin Sorenson.
Judges were Aaron Mercer, Aaron Prohaska, Tom Seeba and Chad Metschke. Master Judge was Gary Martin. Rick Baxter was team logistics support, and O’Neal and Troy Via, vice president of Energy Delivery, were there as management sponsors.
