Electricity 101 – Generating power with different fuel sources

OPPD uses a variety of fuel sources to generate electricity for the customers in our 13-county service territory: natural gas, oil, coal, landfill gas, solar, wind and hydroelectric.

The first step in getting power to your home is the creation, or generation, of electricity.

OPPD uses a variety of fuel sources to generate electricity for the customers in our 13-county service territory: natural gas, oil, coal, landfill gas, solar, wind and hydroelectric.

Using a variety of fuel sources helps OPPD provide reliable power in the most cost-effective manner possible.

No single generation source can withstand all types of severe weather, and that’s why having a diverse energy portfolio is so important. If one source is not available for any reason, other generation sources ensure our customers have the electricity they need when they need it.

OPPD creates or generates electricity in two main ways: by spinning a turbine connected to a generator or by converting radiant energy from the sun into electricity.

To learn more about more about turning fuel sources into electricity, watch this week’s video. You can also check out our Power Generation page.
