Your air conditioning system is a lot like your car. The more dutiful you are about maintenance, the longer, and more efficiently, it will run.

If you notice noises or reduced output from your air conditioner as you begin to use it this year, make some observations before calling for service.

OPPD recommends having your heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system serviced at least once per year, either in spring and/or fall.

Other indications your air conditioner may need service include:

  • Squealing, grating or grinding within the interior HVAC system or outside on the exterior unit.
  • Rattling when the unit is running could indicate a problem with the fan’s motor.
  • Unit can’t keep up with the desired comfort level inside your home. This is true for both heating and cooling. Also, if you notice weak air flow from your AC vents, you may want to check the unit’s compressor.

HVAC Smart program

If you decide to replace your HVAC or heat pump system with a high-efficiency one, OPPD’s HVAC Smart program offers rebates for qualifying purchases. The program began in June 2015. From that time through the end of 2015, over 1,300 customers received rebates through the program.
