Electric vehicles (EVs) are becoming more common, and many drivers are wondering whether an EV fits their lifestyle. The answer isn’t the same for everyone.
Switching to an EV depends on driving patterns, charging access, costs and personal priorities.
“People don’t need to decide for or against an EV right away,” said Bridgett Petzoldt, a product manager at OPPD. “What matters most is having clear, personalized information so they can make a decision that fits their daily life.”
Daily mileage and travel routines affect what EV range is practical. Charging access also varies: Most EV drivers can easily charge at home, while others rely on workplace or public stations.
“There’s no one-size-fits-all answer when it comes to charging,” Petzoldt explained. “It really depends on what’s available and convenient in your area.”
EV ownership costs can differ from traditional vehicles, and factors like electricity rates, maintenance and charger installation can influence the total picture.
“Costs can vary more than people expect,” Petzoldt noted. “That’s why looking at total cost of ownership and not just the purchase price, is so important.”
OPPD’s online calculator offers personalized estimates based on your driving habits and household details. It provides insight into charging costs, fuel savings, environmental impact, and long‑term ownership considerations.
“Our goal is to give people clear, customized data,” Petzoldt says. “The calculator helps users see how an EV might fit into their routine, without steering the decision one way or the other.”
