Electricity 101: The right voltage for your home

July 7, 2025 | Wire Staff | electricity 101, T&D, transformers
Electricity passes through multiple transformers before entering your home. That transformer lowers the voltage again.

Last week, we discussed distribution lines, which carry electricity into neighborhoods like yours. That electricity needs a final adjustment before it enters your home. Once again, OPPD uses transformers to make that adjustment.

But in this case, the transformers are found either mounted on power poles or in green boxes on the ground known as padmount transformers.

These transformers lower the voltage of the electricity a final time before it enters your home. Doing so ensures that you receive the correct voltage for all the appliances and devices in your home, including your air conditioner, refrigerator, cellphone charger and more.

For more details on this process, check out this week’s video, below.

And come back next week, when we’ll discuss what you need to know about the power line that carries electricity from the transformer to your home.
